Researchers and students begin by submitting Report of Invention (ROI) form or Report of Copyright form, to TEC Edmonton. A member of the TEC Transfer team will consult with you to determine if the you want to assign technology ownership to TEC Edmonton or develop the technology independently.
When a Researcher or student assigns ownership of an invention to TEC Edmonton, our TEC Transfer team follows these steps.
1. Ownership due diligence.
2. Technology assessment and recommendation: evaluate the technology and conduct market research to determine commercial potential or industry interest.
3. Intellectual property (IP) protection: file a patent application (or trademark protection or copyright registration), and manage the patent prosecution process. This may include covering initial statutory protection expenses and/or seek other support to take on the financial risk.
4. Depending on the commercialization avenue:
A. Licensing the Technology
- Marketing of the technology: identify potential industrial and/or financial partners, and market technology to suitable companies.
- Negotiate and administer agreements: when a target receptor company indicates interest in licensing a technology, negotiate terms of the legal agreements relating to the rights to use the invention and the returns for use.
- Our team helps manage revenue collection and distribution.
B. Company Formation
- Create a new company based on the technology.
